an inquiry about rental recently referred to the place as a "writer's retreat". which of course is how I advertise it. And she and I had a conversation about the mechanics of earning money while writing, how far you should go to please publishers and so on; it's a pleasant side effect of where I advertise it that I'm getting intelligent, literary people who care about the things I care about. and as my circumstances don't allow me to use it to write very often, or for very long, it's good that at least someone can get the benefit from it.

quotes for roof replacement are coming in, and they're not pretty; could I get away with charging $1000 a week, I wonder? probably not. not even after there's a new roof and the rabbits can't get in. still, it's one of those things that has to be done. I hate to think how much internal improvement I could do with what I'm going to cost - maybe it's a good thing. the place doesn't need a marble-effect bathroom and gilded kitchen taps anyway (though fewer cracks in the plaster would be nice)
